Clear Cut LogoThe Erie Canal flows through the Town of Perinton, as well as neighboring towns, and contributes to the rich natural diversity of our area. 

A vegetation management project for embankment maintenance, with clear-cutting plans for certain areas, has been undertaken by the New York State Power Authority and Canal Corporation.    

A lawsuit was filed by the towns of Perinton, Pittsford & Brighton against both the NY Power Authority and the Canal Corporation.

Recent milestones are listed below, with applicable links:

October 10, 2018: The New York Power Authority and the New York State Canal Corp. announced that they will not be perfecting their appeal of the Supreme Court decision enjoining clearcutting on the Erie Canal pending State Environment Quality Review Act compliance.

March 8, 2018:  Acting State Supreme Court Justice Daniel Barrett ruled in favor of the towns of Pittsford, Perinton & Brighton in the suit they brought against the NY Power Authority & the Canal Corporation.

February 9, 2018:  Temporary Restraining Order Granted by Supreme Court Justice Daniel Barrett (that the Towns of Pittsford, Brighton & Perinton requested). This enjoins & restrains the Power Authority & the Canal Corporation from taking any steps or actions to remove vegetation from the Canal embankments, pending the hearing & determination of the case.
