David Cohen always loves when his band Prime Time Funk play as the house band for the Rochester Hall of Fame. This year was a little special when about 10 days before the show the Fairport resident learned his band would be playing with Paul Simon.

“It was great,” Cohen said. “He was amazing.”

Cohen’s band will be one of the highlighted bands of the Sunday Evening Concerts on Center Stage at Center Park in Perinton. Ruby Shooz, which plays 50s and 60s music, opens up the series July 8 at 6 p.m.

Wegmans sponsors the Center Stage concert series.

Prime Time Funk is scheduled to play July 29. The band, which has been together for since 1996, plays funk, jazz and R&B music.

The band, which has played in Perinton for six years, will play in Webster’s Jazz Fest the week before Perinton. Prime Time Funk also has played in the Rochester Jazz Fest for six years. The band also plays at Del Lago casino and has even played in jazz festivals in Paris, France.

Cohen loves performing at home.

“We love playing in Perinton,” he said. “The crowd is always great, the events are well attended the facility is great.”

Cohen gives drum lessons out of his Fairport home and runs a retail drum outlet in Fairport.

Four other Fairport bands will play in Perinton, all scheduled from 6-8 p.m. Bill Tiberio’s Educators Band (July 15), Northside Johnny (August 12), Mr. Mustard (August 26) and Perinton Concert Band and Fairport Fire Department Band will play “A Salute of America” (Sept. 9).

Mr. Mustard, a Beatles cover band, is one of the series favorites.

“To my amazement we have been doing this for nine years and the following just keeps getting larger,’’ Fairport resident and band member Mick George said. “People from 7 to 70 love the Beatles. They know all the words. I like to say we don’t dress like the Beatles and between the five of us we might have the hair to make one Beatle, but we love doing this.”

George plays in his church band and he had followers track him down after the service Sunday and ask him when they will be at the amphitheater.

Mr. Mustard plays all over New York state and also teams up with school districts in the Rochester and Buffalo area to play with their school orchestras and spread a little Beatles love.

Other bands in the series include Starlight Orchestra (July 15), Orient Express (July 22), Miller and the Other Sinners (August 5), Rochester Rat Pack (August 19) and The Blues Family Showband (August 19).

A special food truck will be featured at each concert. July 8: The Meatball Truck; July 15: Big Al’s Empanadas; July 22: Cheesed and Confused; July 29: Brunch Box; August 5: Whole-E Roasters; August 12: Tuscan Wood Fired Pizza; August 19: Macarollin; August 26: Tuscan Wood Fired Pizza; Sept. 9: Le Petit Poutine.

Golf cart sponsors for the concert series include Vision Kia, Hoselton Automall, Casa Larga Vineyards, Perinton/Fairport Republican Committee and Fairport Federal Credit Union. Additional sponsors include Lugia’s Ice Cream and Constellation Bands.

Besides the food trucks each week, Fairport Lion’s Club will be selling hot dogs and hamburgers, Casa Larga Vineyards and Lugia’s Ice Cream will be selling refreshments.
