Highway Department

The responsibilities of the Town of Perinton’s Highway Department include four major functional program areas:

  1. Highway Maintenance: Highway maintenance ensures that the 326 lane miles of town owned highways are kept in safe working order using three distinct types of improvement; routine maintenance, preventative maintenance, and capital improvement. The time frame and the type of maintenance performed on each road is determined through a rating process developed by the Cornell Local Roads Program.  Click on the Town, County and State Road Projects icon at the bottom of this page for more information on the Town of Perinton’s highway maintenance program.

  2. Residential Refuse: The Town of Perinton offers one of the most extensive Weekly Residential Refuse Collection Programs in Monroe County. The Town collects yard waste and landscape debris, tree debris, bulk leaves, tires, and metal/appliances. This material is properly recycled or composted; therefore, the Town cannot accept bagged material. Click on the Residential Refuse Program icon below for guidelines, information on disposing of difficult material, and a list of specific items only collected by private trash haulers.

  3. Bulk Leaf Collection: Town crews collect bulk loose-leaf piles with vacuum machines and loaders several times throughout the fall. It can take up to 6-weeks to collect bulk leaves from all 17,000 residential properties throughout Town during the peak Fall season. Bulk leaf piles in the fall do not need to be containerized and should be placed parallel to the curb, NOT in the road. Crews continue to pick-up containerized yard debris (separate from loose-leaf piles) as long as the material is placed in reusable containers or cans without lids. Click on the Bulk Leaf Collection Program icon below for more information and guidelines.

  4. Snow and Ice Control: During the winter season, the Highway Department provides snow and ice control for over 456 miles of highways within the Town.  This includes 326 lane miles of town owned highway, as well as 70 lane miles of Monroe County-owned highways, and 60 lane miles of New York State owned highways, except for Interstate 490. During periods of icy conditions, our fleet of salt trucks uses computer-controlled material spreaders to apply the appropriate amount of de-icing materials, limiting environmental impacts, yet still ensuring that the roads are safe for the traveling public. Similarly, our fleet of snow plows are dispatched when conditions require the highways to be plowed. The town maintains duty staff 24/7 from November 15th to April 1st in order to respond to changing winter conditions.
